Once in a generation with Nick Kaldas
Season 1 : Episode 7
In this episode, we chat with the chair of the Royal Commission into Defence and veteran suicide, Nick Kaldas APM.
Before accepting that role, Nick spent almost 35 years as a member of the NSW police force, rising to deputy commissioner, a position he held for almost a decade.
Prior to that, he was assistant commissioner, responsible for counter-terrorism and special tactics.
He has also worked in a number of senior roles for the United Nations, leading its investigation into the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al Hariri and into the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict.
In these and other roles Nick has worked closely with our military. nevertheless, he’s the first to admit that the scale of the problems associated with defence and veteran suicide took him by surprise.
He's on record saying that this Royal Commission provides ‘a once in a generation chance” to address what he unashamedly calls “the suicide crisis” afflicting our military.
